There is live music on the street at all hours of the day, food, food, food, and t-shirts as far as the eye can see, usually 5 for $20. Best one so far – “Shuck me, suck me, eat me raw.” With the logo of a New Orleans oyster bar.
A fellow Scrabble widow and I toured the St. Louis cemetery yesterday. This is the tomb of Marie Laveau, reputed to be a voodoo priestess.
People leave offerings year-round, although our guide claims that at the “high holidays” the offerings often form a much, much bigger pile. Yesterday, the offerings included everything from roses and candles to a half-eaten apple and a calculator.
Did you happen to run accross a fast food joint called “Chicken Little”? They used to have an outlet near lake Ponchartrain (spelling?)and the chicken was like KFC only spicy and worth eating.
No – but I’m preparing a full gastronomic report… we’ve eaten really well this week!
Maggie,
I stumbled across your blog while searching for articles about Cowansville. I was born in St. Lambert, lived in Longueuil, and moved to the states in 1954. I have some old photos of the area in the family page linked to my website.
What I remember best about Cowansville is the French-fry stand where we used to stop on the way back to Montreal from West Brome. Oh they were good.
The primary purpose of this note is to comment on your writing: You are gifted! Your words just seem to flow, and are a pleasure to read.
Do you write for a living? If not, you should.

I can never remember if I post as Vinny or Francois here…
Anyways, where did the fun, daily updates for your readership’s amusement go? It’s almost as though you took this vacation for YOUR OWN PLEASURE rather than ours. Shame on you!
Bruce – wow! thanks! I don’t write for a living, but I do teach English at the college level. Unfortunately, my self-discipline is practically non-existent, so becoming a professional writer is probably a bad idea, at least in terms of a steady paycheck.
Franvin – the fun, daily updates lost out to the free-flowing hurricanes and dollar drafts, but I am working on a complete report, with photos and possibly even a star system for the restaurants. In the meantime, today’s report is – laundry. Lots and lots of laundry.
Bruce – I checked out the family pictures, including one of you as a small boy. It turns out our karmic connection is even deeper – I currently live in Verdun.
Oh, and although I’ve never lived in Longueuil, we did live in St. Lambert until I was 7.
I guess I’d better start preparing the family for the inevitable move to Tuscon 😉
Even more coincidences: my wife taught English at our local college for several years, until I rescued her to run our business. Much happier now. Her students were mostly unmotivated, used to coming to class and then passing, with little effort in the middle. She didn’t go along with their system and they didn’t like it.
Nice story: We met in college. She had always wanted to become a teacher, so when we got married I supported her while she got her BA and MA from the University of Arizona. I always wanted her to have a license plate that said BAMAUA. 🙂
Back to my original search that turned up your blog. Up until two years ago greater Montreal had a great webcam system. We loved to see the skaters in winter in Old Montreal, and watch the seasons change from the Longueuil webcam in the park. Not no more we don’t. Montreal “improved” their webcams to a lousy format, and dropped Longueuil.
Are there any other webcams you know of in your area that offer nice views similar to what Montreal used to offer? I was hoping Cowansville might have one.
Thanks.
Not that I know of, Bruce, but then again, we live here, so we’re not usually trying to find pictures of here.
Dr. T’s mum, who resides in England, used to spy on us via the web cam, too, and reports the same disappointment – if you do find one, please let me know!!
If you’re interested in seeing the morning rush hour, I can send you a link for the traffic cams 😉
